McDonald's has removed a holiday advertisement created using Artificial Intelligence following facing significant criticism on social media.

The short ad was created via AI video tools and was initially published online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Viewer Criticism and Removal

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media criticized the employment of AI in the advert. Many labeled it "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This experience represents an important lesson as we explore the effective use of AI," stated a spokesperson from the company.

The advert was developed for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of situations that might go awry over the Christmas break, with the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Campaigns that feature AI-created content have emerged as a increasing phenomenon among large brands, particularly for the Christmas season.

  • Another beverage giant has recently launched back-to-back AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: Since clips created using generative AI are prone to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be about short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also raised worries about the replacement of human roles in the advertising industry, with some critics pointing out it might negatively impact opportunities for camera crews.

Response from the Creators

After the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

She stated, the creation required "seven weeks" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then crafted afterward "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a film."

Mixed Public Reception

While the McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the sentiment for some AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand reportedly garnered a 61% "positive feedback" from online commenters.

However, several companies have likewise encountered criticism for using AI in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics called "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The incident highlights the evolving discussion within the marketing and creative industries about the trade-off between AI efficiency and audience reception.
