The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
